The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
